Who I Am

I’m Amy Lafond and the face behind Ruxie Beadwork. I get asked a lot “Ruxie, what’s that?”, well Ruxie Lake is the name of a lake I grew up near and spent most of my summers as a kid at. The lake is more commonly known as Emerald Lake Regional Park, and is about 120km north of where I currently reside in Saskatoon, SK.

I’ve stayed close to my roots, with family at from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and other family farming in the area nearby. I grew up not learning about my Cree heritage and found myself becoming curious about the culture in my late teens when COVID-19 locked down the country. The extra free time gave me an opportunity for self-reflection and I began learning to bead. I learned mostly from YouTube, fell in love with the art very quickly and the endless possibilities of beads.

I’m still finding my style when it comes to beading, but you might notice that I tend to stray away from bright, bold colours and opt for more neutral and earth tones. I like being able to have my accessories match almost any outfit with business casual attire being heavily considered. But I also like to make fun things like cartoon characters once in a while!

When I’m not working at my day job, you’ll find me beading or playing on my computer. By day I am the Accounts Manager at a Montessori School. In my own time I prefer to be introverted, chilling out with my guinea pigs and cat.
